Organizations

Another very interesting presentation. You address the topic broadly and thoughtfully. I enjoyed the breadth of the project and also the diversity in opinion that you proffered.

Rather than me asking you lots of questions at this point, I'm going to leave this space more open so that this group can post more information as some of their presentation was missing.

A few general questions, though:

How are these different organizations connected? Are they essentially Western organizations or are they truly global? Is there a a difference between an organization that is global in reach and one that is global in its set-up?

I believe that all these organizations are connected by all of them trying to be global the only difference is that they go about it in different ways. For example some want to dominate the globe while others are truly trying to help people and benefit people around the globe. Essentially these organizations are Western because of the ideologies that these organizations have and try to spread. Again money is power so in order for these organizations to do what they do, they need to be funded and are all funded by western and developed countries that have money, in turn they will do what is neccessary in order to keep being funded even if it hurts another country, but they will still try to make it sound like it is helping that other country. Citizen and non-profit organization are still essentially westernized too, but they have far less corruption and far better outcomes than organization that are corporate run and dominated. Some organization are trying to do the right thing to help out everyone and make things fair for other countries, while some take advantage and tear other countries apart.. Feel free to ask anymore questions about the presentation and things and I will try my hardest to answer any questions that may arise....

I think that this presentation was very interesting and great.
For the questions posted, I think that all organizations are connected by the ideology that globalization or Americanization is "good". Of course, the good things, benefits are not equally distributed and mostly those are for developed countries. I think that these organizations never do something that negatively affect Western imarges or ideology. Most organizations are for money. Some are for spreading or developing the ideology around the world. The ideology makes people believe that globalization or Americanization is good for all. The organizations, which are run by the government tend to be this pattern, I guess. I believe that there are NGOs (Non-government organization), which are running not for money or Western ideology. Some are just running for helping other people around the world, I think. However, the influence of organizations which funded and run by government certainly is much bigger.

Since I did not hand in comments on this presentation last week, allow me to comment a bit right now. I thought that this presentation was well done and everyone seemed to contribute equally. I liked the information that was presented on international organizations such as Interpol. I had first come across this organization when reading The Davinci Code a few years back. I thought that they were some European police force or something up until I heard this presentation. The video in the begining with all the facts was amazing and very thought provoking. Overall this presentation was well put together.
As for the questions,I think these organizations are globally connected by one force: humanity. Whether it be controlling international crimes or solving the worlds greatest epidemics, these organizations are out to help others and create peace and tranquility amongst the world. Along these lines, I would tend to say that these organizations are truly global as opposed to western, although the beneficiaries in the world are still the Western countries. While these orgainzations tend to be global in set up, they tend to be more Western in set up with the intent of reaching out globally. The way the United Nations is set up is an exemplary model of this because the five nations that have the most say in what goes on, which are the worlds superpowers (United States, Russia, England, China (?), and one other country) are the ones that have the most say in the UN Agenda and have the power of veto. So again as Tom said it comes back to the concept of who has the most money and power, and it is clearly the more Western nations that have the upper hand in these organizations.

Hey Everyone, this is Nathan. Still can't get my user name to work. i mean it hasn't at all this semester why change now right.

I believe all these organizations are connected in some way shape or form. i'm not sure how, but i feel as globalization continues to grow and spread that there is no possible way for organizations and or groups no to be affected or influenced by others. They may not be the ones we talked about in our presentation. And not all these organizations have bad intentions and are out for world domination like dr. evil.
I may have imagined this but i feel like earlier in the semester we talked about how does some work for a non profit organization. IS it selfishness to make themselves feel better or do they truely care about the world as they portray. In these organizations like IOC and the red cross that there are really people who are trying to make a difference. What do you guys think?
I had another point to make but i've drawn a blank. hope what i said makes some kind of sense.

I agree with both Susumu and Nathan. I feel that in most cases these organizations are out for money power or both although some more so than others as well as some being founded on good morals. I also feel that the majority of lower level individuals working or volunteering for these organizations particularly NGOs do this for a the sake of helping those in need. Once you get to the upper rungs in the ladder (the higher level employees and presidents etc) the situation begins to change and they see their postition as a status that needs protection first and protecting individuals under their aid last. All in all I thought this presentation was well put together even with computer issues and such. I especially liked how the goup tried to have some positive examples as well as the negative.

An organization that is global in reach can be very different from an organization that is global in its set-up.

I would consider the Red Cross to be globalized in its set-up because it has always ignored the color of a uniform, and the color of the people to help. It is meant to benifit the entire world, and not just the country of its origin.

An organization that is global in reach will have an agenda, and have goals set that exploit and use people for their own good, and for the good of its homeland.

It is unfortunate but there is no way to recover the rest of the project that was finished on Josh's computer. I'm putting together the ending like I remember it, but it has proven to be quite difficult.

The organizations in our presentation are connected in which they are all trying to pursue their individual goals on a wide scale. For the Red Cross, it is to be able to help more people, therefore to spread its work and reach a broader range of people in need. Businesses, such as WalMart, want to reach a broader customer base so that they can make more money.
The way in which these businesses or organizations exemplify globalization is exactly how they represent Western influence. The ideology in which the organizations feel that they should get involved in other countries and other cultures is very Westernized. Most Eastern ideas are keeping within one's own traditions and not venturing outward. Instead, the Eastern ideology is to look into many cultures and many variations of cultures form. Like in America, the society takes in any ideas from other cultures that will be advantageous. It is a Western ideal to spread one's beliefs upon others and help people who may not even want it.
